Case Study: Pacu™
Offshore operations face the persistent challenge of corrosion, which threatens the structural integrity and longevity of marine infrastructure. Imenco Corrosion Technology, a pioneer in corrosion protection, addressed this issue by implementing its innovative Pacu™ system for a client in West Africa. This case study delves into the project execution, environmental benefits, and substantial financial savings achieved through the use of the Pacu™ system.
Client Challenge
A key offshore operator in West Africa was confronting severe degradation of mooring chains used in their deep-water facilities. The client sought a robust corrosion protection solution that conformed to rigorous industry standards and was adaptable to existing infrastructures.
The Solution: Pacu™
Imenco Corrosion Technology recommended the use of its Pacu™ system, an advanced cathodic protection technology tailored for the harsh marine environment. This solution is part of Imenco’s commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.
Project Execution – Collaboration and Planning
The project started with detailed consultations among Imenco’s technical team, the client, and Lloyd’s. This ensured that the solution was aligned with all regulatory, operational, and environmental considerations.
Implementation
Installation of the Pacu™ system was conducted using work-class ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), consistent with Imenco’s design philosophy. This approach allows for deployment by any standard work-class ROV, eliminating the need for diver interventions and significantly reducing human safety risks.
The client chose to install Pacu™ on the most damaged chains first, then on all their newly installed mooring chains.
Outcomes and Benefits
- Extended Equipment Lifespan: Pacu™ is projected to extend the mooring chains’ operational life by up to 20 years, diminishing the need for frequent replacements and associated costs.
- Environmental Impact: By reducing the frequency of chain replacements, the Pacu™ system significantly cuts down on the CO2 emissions associated with manufacturing and transporting new chains. This contributes to a substantial decrease in the environmental footprint of offshore operations.
- Cost Efficiency: The longevity provided by Pacu™ translates into deferred capital expenditures on new chains, amounting to considerable financial savings over time. During any given FPSO asset-life on location (e.g.: 15 years+/-), this cost-avoidance is estimated to amount to more than 100 mill USD, without taking potential stop-in-production into account.
- Compliance and Safety: The installation method using ROVs not only complies with international standards but also enhances safety by removing the need for diver operations, thus significantly lowering the human safety risks commonly associated with underwater activities.
- Regulatory Approval: The solution met and exceeded the stringent standards set by Lloyd’s, ensuring it adhered to global maritime safety regulations.
- DNV Approval: Approval planned to be finished Q4 2024
Conclusion
The deployment of Imenco Corrosion Technology’s Pacu™ for one major Oil & Gas operator in West Africa exemplifies the company’s expertise in delivering environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions for marine corrosion protection. The project showcased how innovative technologies like Pacu™ could enhance operational efficiencies, extend the life of marine equipment, and significantly reduce environmental impacts and human safety risks. Imenco continues to set new standards in the industry, proving that environmental stewardship and economic efficiency can go hand in hand.
