Precision machining of pipes using spark erosion

Machining the inside of a pipe places great demands on precision – especially when you want a special contour on the inner diameter. When traditional methods don’t produce the desired result – either due to the hardness of the material, the complexity of the mould or the need for accuracy – spark erosion is often the solution.

Using electric sparks, material is removed layer by layer, without physical contact between tool and workpiece. This makes the method ideal for internal processing of pipes, even in very hard metals.

What is an immersion heater?

EDM is a form of electro-erosion machining (EDM) where an electrode is lowered into the workpiece. As the electrode approaches the material, small electrical discharges are created that melt and remove material with high precision.

The process takes place in a liquid bath with a dielectric that both cools and rinses away particles. The result is a precise and smooth surface – without mechanical wear on the pipe.

When to use a countersunk grating for machining pipes?

The method is used when complex shapes, small tolerances and high surface quality are required on the inside of a pipe. Especially in the oil and gas industry, vertical moulding is used to machine high-pressure pipes, sleeves and valve parts in materials such as duplex, superduplex and inconel.

The method is also used in the aerospace and maritime industries for components that require precision and stability under extreme conditions. In medical technology, vertical moulding makes it possible to create small tubular components and instruments with microscopic accuracy, while the tool and mould industry uses the technology to create precise cavities and profiles where traditional methods fall short.

Countersinking provides good accuracy. The process is suitable for hard and hardened metals and can produce detailed internal profiles, grooves and cavities.
