What is spark erosion?

senkegnist

Accuracy and quality have become increasingly critical. Creating high-precision components requires methods that can deliver flawless results. spark erosion is a form of electroerosion machining (EDM) that makes it possible to mould metals with a high degree of accuracy – so that the component gets the right shape.

When accuracy is key

Spark erosion or diesinking EDM is a process that uses electrical sparks to erode material from a workpiece. Unlike wire sparking, where a wire is used as an electrode, diesinking uses a shaped electrode that is customised to the desired contour or shape to be created in the workpiece.

The electrode is gradually lowered into the workpiece and, through a series of spark discharges, the material is removed layer by layer. The process takes place in a liquid-filled tank with dielectric.

When do I use a vertical grating?

Die-sinker is often used when there is a need to create highly complex, precise shapes, often in hard materials such as iconell, duplex, super duplex or other steel and metal alloys. This is particularly important in industries that require absolute precision in every component, such as the oil industry, aerospace, medicine or advanced tool manufacturing. The ability to work to tight tolerances without causing mechanical stress to the material makes the die-sinker an indispensable tool for many high-tech manufacturing environments.

Some of the main advantages of using vertical moulding as a production method are:

Perfect surface finish.

Since the desired surface finish is customised by the machining technology and the type of material being machined, the finished part will have the surface finish desired in relation to the machine drawing and customer specification.

Design flexibility – The electrode can be moulded precisely to the desired geometry, enabling the creation of highly intricate details, deep cavities and complex structures that would be challenging with more traditional machining methods.

Reliability – From planning to machining, the entire process is characterised by a systematic approach where nothing is left to chance. This combination of technology, experience and accuracy ensures that the end result is reliable and durable.

Optimal for advanced solutions – When the accuracy, shape of the part or type of material means that other machining methods are inadequate, vertical moulding can be the solution – both in terms of quality and precision.
